Mini Rails
Some train and stock games can be scary. They have years for titles and are referred to as 18XX. Mini Rails is a quick playing stock and rails game that does away with in depth complex rules to provide an enjoyable game full of thoughtful decisions.
The game comes with 72 wooden discs in six colours, a modular map that can be arranged in different ways and two player pawns for each player. These are set-up on a turn tracker with two rows.
For the first round, the player pawns are laid out in a order and then mirrored, for example: 1p 2p 3p 3p 2p 1p, meaning the first player gets to go first and last. The wooden discs are placed into a bag, drawn randomly and placed on the row below the player order track until there is one more than the player pawns.
On your turn you will always take one of the discs and move your pawn onto the space the disc occupied. This will form the next round's player order, so if you chose the third disc you will get the third turn next round.
Once you have a disc you can choose to take a stock in that colour by placing the disc at zero on your player board, or extending a rail track by placing it on the board - but during a round you must do both actions. When you extend a rail track the space you place the disc on will increase or decrease the stock of that colour on the player boards of those with stock of that colour. For example if you have taken two stock of red and other player causes red to drop in value both your reds will drop.
Stocks are how you ultimately score points so you need to invest wisely, and also scupper your opponents chances for scoring. Mini Rails is an engaging battle of wits, timing your moves, and taking your chances. It is easy to learn and a joy to play!
